Youth Access to Tobacco

Kids in the U.S. smoke almost a billion packs of cigarettes per year. That represents a pretty good return on investment for the tobacco companies. While the tobacco industry reaps massive profits, our kids get hooked on nicotine – more than 6 million children alive today will likely die of cigarette smoking. And what happens then? If we don't take action, it will be business as usual – the tobacco companies may turn another generation of kids into smokers.

In this section of the site, you can explore two subjects: novel tobacco products (NTPs) and compliance checks.

NTPs exhibit the tobacco industry at its most shameless – these products are marketed almost as if they were candy, with sweet flavors and colorful packaging that appeal to kids. The problem is that they're far more dangerous than candy – they are addictive and can lead to serious health risks and even death.

Compliance Checks

Compliance checks are used by law enforcement officials and researchers to measure the illegal sale of tobacco products to underage customers. Compliance checks let us know how successful our stores are at keeping tobacco out of the hands of kids.
