Content Development

Patty Greenberg, MA
Ms. Greenberg is a medical sociologist at Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation. She has 12 years experience conducting research, with a special focus in adolescent health risk behaviors such as the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Ms. Greenberg is an Investigator on the NCI sponsored study, Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products.


Natasha Jamison, MPH
Ms. Jamison is a Health Researcher with the Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation. Ms. Jamison has expertise in program development, program evaluation, coalition building, public health advocacy, and community based research. Her work has focused on health behavior and policy with a particular interest in cancer prevention and tobacco control.


Principal Investigators

Pamela I. Clark, PhD
Dr. Clark is a leading expert in state and community approaches to tobacco control. She is experienced in the prevention of youth risk behaviors, particularly in tobacco initiation, maintenance, and cessation. Dr. Clark is the co-author of two medical textbooks, has contributed chapters to three others, and has published more than 80 papers in the medical and public health literature. She is currently the Principal Investigator on the two NCI grants that form the basis of the content of the website: Business Practices and Minors' Access To Tobacco and Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products. In addition, she collaborates with researchers, educators and policy makers from many government and private institutions.


Ellen Feighery RN, MS
Ms. Feighery has been involved with studies of tobacco retail outlets since 1991. She was a member of the statewide steering committee for Operation Storefront, a Prop 99 statewide effort to stimulate local action against tobacco advertising and currently serves on the Statewide Point-of-Sale Practices Workgroup. She also is Co-Principal Investigator of Retail Practices and Youth Access to Tobacco and Co-Investigator of Impact of Retail Tobacco Advertising on Youth Smoking, both of which are funded by the National Cancer Institute. She has published widely on tobacco issues.

Additional Battelle Staff

Diana Buck, BA
Ms. Buck is experienced in research design, quantitative and qualitative data analysis and writing. She prepares and analyzes data and assists in the planning of data collection efforts.

Deon M. Harvey, PhD
Dr. Harvey is a neuroscientist who directs Battelle's Human Exposure Assessment Laboratory. She has a preclinical background with a variety of bench skills and more recently has worked on clinical research studies involving tobacco addiction. She has been involved with tobacco projects from conceptualization to data collection, analysis and dissemination.

Jaana Myllyluoma, PhD
Dr. Myllyluoma is a health demographer with over twenty years of experience in social science and public health research. Many of her recent studies have focused on collecting sensitive information, such as sexual behavior and illegal drug use, and interviewing vulnerable populations such as minors and persons with mental illness. Her substantive expertise is in the area of youth access to tobacco. She is Co-Principal Investigator on the project, Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products and Co-Investigator on Business Practices and Minors' Access to Tobacco.

Carol L. Schmitt, PhD
Dr. Schmitt is a social psychologist. She is coordinating the production of a National Cancer Institute monograph documenting the American Stop Smoking Intervention Study and directing the Strength of Tobacco Control component of the SmokeLess States Evaluation. Dr. Schmitt takes both lead and contributory roles on tobacco control and youth alcohol projects at all stages, from conceptualization to data collection, analysis, and dissemination. She is a Co-Investigator on Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products, funded by NCI.

Kathleen Tiefenwerth, MS
Ms. Tiefenwerth has more than 20 years of experience in health and human services. Her educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology, a Diploma in Nursing and an M.S. in Health Science with a concentration in Administration. Ms. Tiefenwerth planned and implemented data collection for both the Minors' Access To Tobacco and Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products projects.

Charles Wolters, MS
Mr. Wolters is a statistician with over 25 years of experience in the areas of survey design, weighting and estimation, measurement of nonsampling errors, imputation, and variance estimation. He is fluent in SAS and has applied the SUDAAN and WESVAR variance estimation packages to many complex survey designs. Mr. Wolters is a Co-Investigator on Community Surveillance and Novel Tobacco Products.

Public Health Institute

Dianne C. Barker, MHS
Ms. Barker is the chair of the National Advisory Committee for Smoke-Free Families. She also is an Investigator on many projects, including Assessing Youth Smoking Cessation, Exploring Tobacco Dependence Treatment on California College Campuses, and Business Practices and Minors' Access to Tobacco.

Harry Haladjian, BA
Mr. Haladjian's research interests include examining the relationship between tobacco marketing and youth opinions, developing and testing youth health interventions, and evaluating public health programs.

Nina C. Schleicher, Ph D Dr. Schleicher has a rich collaborative history. Since 1992, she has performed statistical analysis, co-authored, or served as a consultant for over thirty scientific articles and reports. From 1998 to 2001 Dr. Schleicher was the principal statistical analyst and evaluation director for studies at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Since 2001, she has served as statistical analyst for the NIH funded study, Business Practices and Minors' Access to Tobacco.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Kurt M. Ribisl, PhD
Dr. Ribisl is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a member of UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is currently Principal Investigator for two studies: a longitudinal study monitoring sales practices and the growth of Internet cigarette vendors and a project that evaluates the impact of youth empowerment groups addressing tobacco use prevention. Dr. Ribisl is the author of more than 40 scientific articles.

University of Illinois at Chicago

Frank J. Chaloupka, PHD
Dr. Chaloupka is an economist with expertise in tobacco control. He is Director of ImpacTeen: A Policy Research Partnership to Reduce Youth Substance, the International Tobacco Evidence Network and the economics component of the Trading Tobacco for Health Initiative. Dr. Chaloupka has published extensively and contributed to both the 1994 and 2000 Surgeon General's reports. In addition, he co-authored the World Bank's policy report: Curbing the Epidemic: Governments and the Economics of Tobacco Control and co-edited the volume Tobacco Control in Developing Countries. Dr. Chaloupka is a Co-Principal Investigator on the study, Business Practices and Minors' Access to Tobacco.

Sandy Slater, MS
Ms. Slater is currently the Deputy Director of the ImpacTeen project, housed at the University of Illinois at Chicago's (UIC) Health Research and Policy Centers. She is a past director of the Illinois tobacco control program with strong cooperative links to many of the federal tobacco control agencies such as SAMHSA/CSAP, NCI, CDC, and a national network of others working on these issues.
