Welcome to the Virtual Store!

This is the place where you can learn how and where to spot tobacco advertising, practice the Store Alert survey and as a bonus, have some fun in the world of our Virtual Store. These interactives will help prepare you to do the survey in the tobacco retail stores in your community.

If this is your first visit to our Virtual Store, you may find it helpful to read through the Store Alert Survey section to learn more about the survey used in these interactives. When you return to the Virtual Store, you will want to begin with the Tour a Store activity.

Tour a Store

Tour a Store How does the Store Alert survey work in a real store? Take our video tour of a convenience/gas store and find out.

Once you have completed the Tour, you're ready to move on to the next step in your training: Score a Store!

How to use Tour a Store
Launch a part of the tour and the video will begin to play. Whenever a tobacco industry object appears on-screen, the video will pause and you will see a pop-up box. The pop-up will give you the chance to see the definition of that object and also where it should be scored on the Store Alert report card. When you are ready to move on, hit the “resume video” button and the video will continue. Afterwards, watch the other parts of the video and learn how to score the rest of the store.

NOTE: If this is your first time in using Tour a Store, we encouage you to read the Big Picture and Training Guide sections first to set the stage for these interactive materials.

Score a Store

Score a Store Score a Store features self-tests that will help prepare you to do the Store Alert survey. Each self-test lets you explore a typical gas/convenience store (the most common kind of tobacco retail store).

The store is littered with tobacco ads, promotions, functional objects – all of the tobacco industry marketing that you've been learning about on this site. Your job is to find these things in the store and record them on the Store Alert report card. We re-shuffle the ads and promos for each self-test, so it's always a little bit different - you can come back to Score a Store again and again and always have a unique experience.

How to use Score a Store
Ready to begin a self-test in our virtual store? Click BEGIN to start with the first part of the test. The test will guide you through all four parts. You may choose any of the four parts at any time via the tabs in the upper right section.

Remember, click on everything. You never know where items migh be lurking! When you think you've found all of the items in the scene, click CHECK SCORE to see how you did. Good Luck!

NOTE: If this is your first time using the Score a Store, we recommend you first take the Tour a Store tutorial or read about the Store Alert Survey before taking any of the self-tests.
